Reference Work — Pope Benedict XIV
Sacramentum Poenitentiae (Constitution of Benedict XIV, 1741)
First published 1741. Translated into English for this library from the Latin as printed in the Documenta appendix of the 1917 Code of Canon Law (Documentum V; AAS 9 (1917) II, 505–508), collated across two transcriptions of that printing. The section headings are editorial. The manuals cite this constitution on the crime of solicitation in confession, on the obligation of denunciation, and on the absolution of an accomplice; it stands here so those citations can be read in full.
The constitution of Benedict XIV (June 1, 1741) on the abuse of the Sacrament of Penance: it confirms Gregory XV’s legislation against confessors who solicit penitents to sin, binds confessors to admonish solicited penitents of the duty of denunciation, reserves the absolution of false accusers to the Pope, and withdraws from every priest the jurisdiction to absolve his own accomplice in a sin against the sixth commandment — the absolution being null and the attempt punished with excommunication reserved to the Holy See. The parallel Latin is given with the English.
