Article 49

¶1.

But those who have transgressed the other things which are prescribed by these General Decrees should, according to the diverse gravity of guilt, be seriously admonished by the Bishop; and, if it shall seem opportune, they should also be coerced by canonical penalties.

Arbitrary penalties

127. 1. This article, against transgressors who have violated other precepts of the General Decrees than those which are sanctioned by excommunication latae sententiae, establishes arbitrary penalties, since judgment concerning their opportuneness and gravity is permitted to the discretion of the Bishop, provided that they are canonical, that is, received in the ecclesiastical forum, and that a congruous admonition has first been made.

Sanction of particular Decrees

2. Although those penalties seem to sanction the General Decrees alone, particular decrees are fortified by the same penalties, since they prohibit individual books "under the penalties declared in the Index of forbidden books."
