I. In the direct line:
- Socer = father of the husband or wife (schoonvader, suocero, beau-pere, father-in-law, Schwiegervater).
Socrus = mother of the husband or wife (schoonmoeder, suocera, belle-mere, mother-in-law, Schwiegermutter).
- Gener = husband of a daughter (schoonzoon, genero, gendre, son-in-law, Schwiegersohn).
Nurus = wife of a son (schoondochter, nuora, belle-fille, daughter-in-law, Schwiegertochter).
- Vitricus = husband of the mother (stiefvader, padrigno, beau-pere, stepfather, Stiefvater).
Noverca = wife of the father (stiefmoeder, matrigna, belle-mere [maratre], stepmother, Stiefmutter).
- Privignus = son from a prior marriage of the other party (stiefzoon, figliastro, beau-fils, stepson, Stiefsohn).
Privigna = daughter from a prior marriage of the other party (stiefdochter, figliastra, belle-fille, stepdaughter, Stieftochter).
II. In the collateral line:
- Levir = brother of the other party (zwager or schoonbroeder, cognato, beau-frere, brother-in-law, Schwager).
Glos = sister of the other party (zwagerin or schoonzuster or snaar, cognata, belle-soeur, sister-in-law, Schwagerin).
- Sororius = husband of a sister (as was said of levir).
Fratria = wife of a brother (as was said of glos).

Question 2. Who are the various affines?
Resp. They are the following, namely:
SOCER, or father by reason of affinity, whether of the married man or of the married woman - father-in-law.
SOCRUS, or mother affine - mother-in-law.
PROSOCER, or grandfather affine - wife's grandfather.
PROSOCRUS, or grandmother affine - wife's grandmother.
GENER, or husband of the daughter - son-in-law.
NURUS, or wife of the son - daughter-in-law.
PROGENER, or husband of the granddaughter - granddaughter's husband.
PRONURUS, or wife of the grandson - grandson's wife.
LEVIR, or brother of the husband or wife - brother-in-law.
GLOS, or sister of the husband - sister-in-law.
FRATRIA, or wife of the brother - sister-in-law, a brother's wife.
SORORIUS, or husband of the sister - brother-in-law, a sister's husband.
VITRICUS, or husband of the mother - stepfather.
PRIVIGNUS, or child from the first Marriage of the father or mother - stepson, stepdaughter.
NOVERCA, or wife of the father - stepmother.
