Chapter V: Concerning the Abuse of the Power of the Confessor

¶3822.

The minister can abuse his power in several ways: by inquiring into the name of an accomplice, by absolving the unworthy or repelling the worthy, by requiring an undue satisfaction or not requiring a fitting one, by violating the seal, etc., which, when occasion is given, are customarily examined in the course of the treatise on Penance; but now it comes especially to be said concerning a twofold abuse more specially prohibited by ecclesiastical authority, namely: 1) concerning the absolution of an accomplice in a base sin; 2) concerning the solicitation of a penitent to base things.
