preface — Merkelbach, Pastoral Questions

To the Benevolent Reader

¶1146.

Some years ago we published Questions on Embryology and the Ministration of Baptism, the second edition of which appeared in 1928. Since that time certain new questions have arisen; others, however, have been proposed in different ways, illustrated by new considerations, investigated more profoundly, and strengthened by new arguments. Moreover, the question of sterilization, which is a matter connected to some extent, has acquired special importance. Hence it does not seem that it will be unwelcome if, concerning all these matters, we modestly offer a judgment and appropriate admonitions with a view to the practice of pastoral ministry. Therefore we have written this new little work under the title: Questions on Embryology and Sterilization: Second Series.

¶1147.

But since it would be useless, at least in many matters, to repeat things already said, in the present little book we presuppose those things which we explained in the preceding little work, but we add many things, so that the former little work is the necessary foundation of the latter, and this latter is held as the necessary complement of the former, such that neither can be understood perfectly without the other.

¶1148.

Wherefore, excellent confrere, may you deign to receive both with equal kindness.
