preface — Merkelbach, Pastoral Questions

To the Benevolent Reader

¶762.

After we have outlined the whole matter, among all others most practical, concerning Chastity and Lust, now, as a complement of the doctrine, we propose the whole range of moral questions pertaining to Embryology, considered both in itself and in its peculiar relations to the great sacrament of Baptism. Concerning all these matters difficulties occur not rarely in the pastoral ministry. And yet, sometimes moralists speak of them very sparingly, or distribute the matter through diverse treatises, treating it without logical order and without connection of ideas. Wherefore, perhaps it will not be unwelcome to you, excellent confrere, to receive a brief, clear, methodical, and synthetic exposition of all those things which you will be able to find scattered through various parts of theology, and in works of greater bulk, or also in special little works.

¶763.

We confidently trust that this has not been done by us without usefulness.
