Treatise — Benedict H. Merkelbach, O.P.
Pastoral Questions
First published 1936. Merkelbach's Quaestiones Pastorales, "proposed for the benefit of the clergy" (Liège: La Pensée Catholique; Paris, Amsterdam, Paderborn, Turin-Rome), in the printings bound together in the scans our translation was made from: I. On Chastity and Lust (fourth edition, 1936); II. On Embryology and the Administration of Baptism (second edition, 1928); IIbis. On Embryology and Sterilization (1937); III. On Various Categories of Penitents (second edition, 1933); IV. On the Minister of Penance and His Duties (second edition, 1935); VI. On Various Sins to Be Healed in Sacramental Confession (1935); and VII. On the Sacrament of Matrimony (1930), the one fascicle of the series written not by Merkelbach but by his confrère Ceslaus-M. Salmon, O.P., of the Louvain Studium. Fascicle V, on the parts of Penance, is not among them and has not been found in any scan. The English translation is our own, made from the Latin; the author's own contents at the back of each fascicle stand with every line a link, and Salmon's Alphabetical Index of Subjects is restored with every reference a link to his numbered section. A Dominican professor of the Angelicum writes for confessors and pastors, question by question: chastity and its sins with the physiology a confessor must know, embryology and the operations of obstetrics (Caesarean section, embryotomy, abortion, ectopic pregnancy), baptism of the unborn, eugenic sterilization, the many kinds of penitents — children, the scrupulous, the dying, the lax, the devout — the confessor's power, duties and abuses, the sins of each state of life and the capital sins; with Salmon's full pastoral treatise on Matrimony under the Code of 1917.
