88. - On the remedy of artificial fecundation. The artificial introduction of the male semen into the vagina of a woman has, in a few cases, been able to bring offspring to sterile or impotent spouses. They report that either a sixth part of the attempts, or 21 out of 65 attempts, succeeded well physically.

It is practiced in various modes. a) Semen collected through masturbation is introduced in several sacs into the depth of the vagina as far as the cervix of the uterus. b) The man coits by means of a "condom"; he collects the semen thus emitted in a small glass siphon, previously warmed, and either he himself or a physician afterwards introduces it into the cavity of the uterus. c) Normal copulation having been performed, the semen is collected by means of a metallic instrument and is introduced more deeply, as far as the cavity of the uterus. d) Without any copulation, spermatozoa are extracted from the inner covering of the testicles (the epididymis), and then introduced into the wife's vagina and uterus.
