preface — Vermeersch, On Chastity

Preface to the Second Edition

¶20.

In this second edition, which ought to have been published several months ago, the reader will find most of what was written in the first edition. Some things, however, especially in that part which treats physiological matters, have either been added or set forth more accurately. Indeed, at the end of the work, before the Indexes, several supplements, chiefly of a scientific character, have been added. We have also endeavored to polish somewhat certain arguments in the difficult question concerning the grave malice of all lust, yet by no means receding from our position, whereby we attempt a direct demonstration of a matter which the most approved writers judge to be true, but support more by their authority than they fully prove, while they take refuge in extrinsic reasons drawn from the danger of delusions or abuses. Moreover, we may not and do not wish to omit attesting in this place our grateful affection toward the many friends who aided us not a little by their counsels and by the resources of their learning.
