Title — Decretals of Gregory IX
Title XXV: On the Office of the Primicerius
Sole Chapter
Latin source headnote: It sets forth those things that pertain to the office of the primicerius. Antonius de Butrio.
The same, from the Book of the Roman Order.
Let the primicerius know that he is under the archdeacon, as is the archpriest, and that it pertains specially to his care to preside over the teaching of deacons or the remaining persons placed in the order of ecclesiastical grades; that he himself is to apply himself to discipline and custody, since he will render an account before God for their souls; and that he himself is to give the deacons the readings that pertain to the night offices of clerics and to have zeal concerning each person, so that, in whatever matter he possesses a capable understanding, he may devote himself without any negligence [to it], or they may be instructed by one whom he commands.
