Manual — Dominic Palmieri, S.J.

Treatise on Christian Marriage

First published 1897. Palmieri's Tractatus de matrimonio christiano, second edition, enlarged and corrected (Prato: Giachetti, Sons and Co., 1897), with the approbation of the Roman Province of the Society of Jesus (1896) and the imprimatur of Prato (1897). The English translation is our own, made from the Latin: his thirty-five theses with their points, the Parergon on the nuptials of the Blessed Virgin and St. Joseph, and his Conspectus of the Church's decrees and canons on marriage down to 1215, one council or letter to a division; his Index stands at the end with every line a link. The Gregorian's Jesuit dogmatic theologian on marriage in thirty-five theses: its essence as a contract and a society, marriage as a sacrament and the inseparability of contract and sacrament among Christians, unity and indissolubility, and the Church's exclusive power over impediments and dispensations, with a documentary appendix of the councils and popes from the first centuries to the Fourth Lateran Council.
