document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage

From the Council of Rouen, A.D. 1072

¶1606.

Canon XIV. Let nuptials not be made in secret nor after lunch; but let the bridegroom and bride, fasting, be blessed by a fasting priest in the monastery; and before they are coupled, let the progeny of both be diligently inquired into; and if within the seventh generation some consanguinity has been found, and if either of them has been dismissed, let them not be joined. The priest who has done contrary to this shall be deposed.

¶1607.

Cf. the decree from the Collection of Benedict the Levite at A.D. 845.

¶1608.

Canon XVI. It was forbidden that anyone who, while his wife was living, had been accused of adultery, after her death should ever accept her concerning whom he had been accused. For many evils have come from this; for very many for this cause killed their wives.

¶1609.

Cf. Canon XL of the Council of Tribur, A.D. 895.

¶1610.

Canon XVII. No one whose wife has been veiled shall ever accept another while she is living.

Canon XVIII. If the wife of a man who has set out abroad has married another man, until she has certainty of the former man's death, she is excommunicated up to fitting satisfaction.
