document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage

From the Council of Toledo, A.D. 589

¶1186.

Canon X. Widows to whom it has pleased to hold chastity shall not be forced by any force to come to repeated nuptials. But if, before they profess continence, they have chosen to marry, let them marry those whom they have chosen by their own will to have as husbands. Let a like condition also be had concerning virgins, lest they be forced to receive husbands apart from the will of their parents or their own will.

¶1187.

Canon XIV. At the suggestion of the council, our most glorious Lord (King Reccared) ordered this to be inserted in the canons, that it is not lawful for Jews to have Christian wives or concubines.
