document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage

From the Constitutions of William, Bishop of Paris, A.D. 1208

¶1677.

Decree XIII. Let priests frequently denounce in the churches that those who contract clandestine marriages, and those who assist in making them, are excommunicated.

¶1678.

Decree XIV. Let priests enjoin upon their parishioners that when matrimony is to be contracted between any persons, those who ought to contract confess, out of reverence for the sacrament, their sins to their priests before they offer faith concerning contracting, or at least before they contract by words concerning the present. But let priests then be solicitous in inquiring especially concerning the impediments of marriage.
