document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage

From the Council of Bourges, A.D. 1031

¶1577.

Canon XVI. That those who dismiss legitimate wives without fault of fornication not accept others while those wives are living; nor wives other men; but let them be reconciled to each other.

¶1578.

The Bishops seem chiefly to have intended that which they put in the last place, that is, the reconciliation of spouses; for this reason they speak only about those who dismiss spouses without the cause of fornication.
