document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage

From the Council of Hippo, A.D. 393

¶997.

Canon XII. It pleased the council that the sons or daughters of bishops or of any clerics whatever are not joined in marriage to Gentiles or heretics or schismatics.

¶998.

Canon XVIII. It pleased the council that readers, when they have come to the years of puberty, be compelled either to marry wives or to profess continence.

¶999.

It is understood that this was established not of itself, but for removing the danger of incontinence, which then was deservedly feared.
