document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage
From the Council of London, A.D. 1175
¶1651.
Canon XVIII. Let no faithful person, of whatever condition he may be, make nuptials secretly, but, having received the blessing from a priest, let him marry publicly in the Lord.
¶1652.
Canon XIX. Where there is not consent of both, there is not a marriage. Therefore those who give girls to boys in cradles do nothing, unless each of the children consents after they have come to the time of discretion. Therefore by the authority of this decree we forbid that henceforth any persons be joined, of whom either both or one has not arrived at the age established by the laws, unless perhaps sometimes, an urgent necessity intervening, such a conjunction is tolerated for the good of peace.
