document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage

From the Council of Lyons, A.D. 583

¶1180.

Canon III. Girls who, by the connivance of their parents, have voluntarily dedicated themselves and have chosen enclosure within a monastery of girls, and by levity of mind or vileness of body have withdrawn themselves from the same monastery, outside the incursion of captivity, by their own will, and have chosen the delights of the world rather than religious conversation and the spirit of their vocation: until they return to the monastery from which they went out, let them be segregated from the grace of communion; nevertheless let the viaticum be afforded to them in consideration of mercy.

¶1181.

It is manifest that the return to the monastery prescribed for these girls comprehends separation from a spouse; therefore these fathers wish that the fault of a contracted marriage be healed by separation. Cf. Canon XIX of the Council of Orleans, A.D. 549.

¶1182.

Canon IV. Concerning incestuous unions, it has pleased us that this be kept which the ancient statutes of the canons sanctioned.
