From the Council of Toul, At Tusey, A.D. 860
¶1501.
Canon II. Concerning women veiled and consecrated to God, both widows and virgins, if they have secretly committed adultery or have publicly married ... we wish that, enclosed in prisons up to the end of life, they do penance; but the men who have brought violence upon them (that is, have abused them) are themselves also to be constrained to penance by ecclesiastical censure.
