document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage
From the Council of Verneuil, A.D. 844
Canon V. Those who are illicitly mingled with nuns and make sacrilegious covenants of nuptials with them, the censure of Pope Innocent commands to be suspended from communion, and not at all to be received unless through public and approved penance; yet certainly the viaticum is not to be denied to those passing from the world, if nevertheless they have repented.
Canon VI. But a girl betrothed by one man and abducted by another, according to the statutes of the Council of Ancyra, is to be returned to him by whom she had been betrothed, even if she has suffered violence from the abductor. But concerning abductors, this seems best to us: that, since they make little of ecclesiastical excommunication, they be terrified by the authority of secular laws.
