document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage
From the Epistle of the Same John VIII, to Airard, Archbishop of Auch, and His Suffragans, A.D. 879
¶1544.
Having made mention of an execrable evil, namely, that their parishioners accept a near relative as wife, he says:
¶1545.
This is not lawful for Christians to do, as long as the generation knows itself.
¶1546.
He adds after a few words. This also, together with them (namely, with the Fathers), we likewise command: that no one leave his own wife and, while she is living, presume to associate another to himself; nor is it lawful for him to have two wives at one time, or a wife and a concubine.
¶1547.
Cf. also his Epistle 345 (Migne 6, L. 7, 126), where he says that as nuptials are from God, so divorce is from the devil; and the statute of the same Pontiff in the second Council of Troyes, confirming the same law.
