document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage
From the Epistle of the Same John VIII, to Anselm, Bishop of Limoges, A.D. 879
¶1543.
If a father, beholding his son dying in body, lest he should dismiss a soul perishing by perpetual death, washed him with the water of sacred baptism ... he is praised as having done well. And therefore we judge that he remain joined without penalty, as long as he shall have lived, with his wife already long ago legitimately associated to him, and that on this account he ought by no means to be separated.
