document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage
From the Roman Council of the Same Gregory II, A.D. 721
Canon I. If anyone has led a presbytera (the wife of a presbyter) into marriage, let him be anathema.
Cf. Canon XXII of the Synod of Auxerre, A.D. 590.
Canon II. If anyone has led a deaconess (the wife of a deacon) into marriage, let him be anathema.
Cf. the same place.
Canon III. If anyone has led a female monk, whom we call a handmaid of God, into marriage, let him be anathema.
Canon IV. If anyone has led a spiritual co-mother into marriage, let him be anathema.
A co-mother is the wife of a godfather already known.
Canon V. If anyone has led the wife of his brother into marriage, let him be anathema.
Canon VI. If anyone has led a niece into marriage, let him be anathema.
Canon VII. If anyone has led his stepmother or daughter-in-law into marriage, let him be anathema.
Canon VIII. If anyone has led a female cousin into marriage, let him be anathema.
Canon IX. If anyone has led as wife one from his own kinship, or (her) whom a kinsman had, let him be anathema.
Cf. the following response of the same Gregory II to Boniface. It is clear that it is supposed to be known how far kinship extends; but in general marriage is forbidden between blood-relatives and affines. Yet how many degrees of kinship were reckoned can be learned both from the response of the same Gregory II to Boniface, soon to be cited, and from Isidore and Gregory the Great, above, and also from the following response of Gregory III. Cf. also Canon XI of the Council of Agde.
Canon XI. If anyone has abducted or stolen as wife a virgin whom he has not betrothed to himself (other reading: unless he has betrothed her), or consenting to him, let him be anathema.
Marriage with the abducted woman is permitted to the abductor if betrothal preceded, which Justinian had denied. Cf. what was said at the canons of the Council of Meaux, A.D. 845.
Gelasius the Roman Pontiff indeed (in the Fragment apud Andreas Thiel after his epistles) said: "That law of former princes said that abduction was committed there where a girl, concerning whose nuptials nothing had been done, seems to have been led away." Gregory follows him.
