document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage
From the Synodal Constitutions of Odo, Bishop of Paris, A.D. 1198
Decree I. Let matrimony be celebrated with honor and reverence, and neither with laughter and jest, nor be contemned even if second and third (nuptials) are made. Before it is made, always on three Sundays or three feast days equally distant, as though by three edicts, let the priest inquire of the people, under penalty of excommunication, concerning the legitimacy of the bridegroom and the bride who ought to be joined. And before faith has been given concerning contracting matrimony and before these three edicts, let no one dare in any way to celebrate marriages.
Decree II. Let them firmly prohibit, by excommunication, sorceries from being done among the laity; let sorcerers also and those concealing consanguinity and the other impediments of marriage - vow, order, consanguinity, affinity, disparity of worship, compaternity, which excludes from marriage only four persons: the co-father, the co-mother, the godchild, and his spiritual brother and sister, namely the son and daughter of the sponsor - be publicly announced as excommunicated.
