document — Palmieri, On Christian Marriage
In the Collection of Capitularies of Benedict the Levite, By Order of Otgar, Archbishop of Mainz, A.D. 845, There Exists, Book III, Under n. 179, This Decree in This Manner
It has been sanctioned that public nuptials be made by those who wish to marry ... First the priest in whose parish the nuptials ought to be made must be approached, in the Church before the people. And there that priest himself, together with the people, ought to inquire whether she is his relative or not ... After all things have been proved and nothing has impeded, then, if she is a virgin, with the blessing of the priest, just as it is contained in the sacramentary, and with the counsel of many good men, publicly and not secretly a wife is to be led, so that good sons may be procreated from them, with the Lord having mercy.
