Article I. On Contrition Properly So Called

730.

Contrition is distinguished as twofold: namely perfect, which is detestation of sin arising from the special motive of perfect charity or of the goodness of God loved supremely for His own sake; and imperfect, or attrition, which is detestation of sin arising from another motive, for example, from the consideration of the baseness of sin, or from fear of hell, or from love of eternal beatitude. Concerning each, three things must be explained, namely necessity, qualities, and efficacy.
