preface — Sabetti-Barrett, Compendium of Moral Theology
Things to Be Noted
I. - Whenever a number from Authors is indicated, it is to be referred to the Treatise concerning which there is question among those Authors: thus, for example, if in the Treatise on Laws you find "St. Alphonsus, n. 40," understand St. Alphonsus, in the Treatise on Laws, n. 40. But if at any time the cited place pertains to a different Treatise, this will be expressly indicated.
II. - In citing St. Alphonsus I have abstained from reporting the number of the Book, because according to the diversity of editions their distribution is diverse.
III. - Whenever Ballerini is cited, the third edition is understood, namely that which reports the responses to the difficulties of the Vindiciae. But the work of Ballerini edited by Palmieri is cited in a special manner.
IV. - Authors, for the greater usefulness of the reader, are always cited at the end of the solution or paragraph. But it is not to be supposed that the solution itself, or at least some one of the given reasons, belongs to them; for the reason why they are cited is that, among them, the question concerning which there is discussion may be seen treated more fully, however diverse the opinion may be which they themselves embrace.
