Chapter X. On the Dispensation of Law

98.

Dispensation is the legitimate relaxation of an obligation arising from law, for some particular case; and therefore it differs both from epikeia and from cessation of law. - Dispensation can be: 1st, licit or illicit, according as it is made for a just cause or not; 2nd, valid or invalid, according as it either exempts from observation of the law or does not exempt; 3rd, absolute or conditioned, according as it is granted simply or with some condition added; 4th, subreptitious or obreptitious, according as in the petition something to be manifested is kept silent, or on the contrary something false is asserted.
