Article II: Of the Tribunals of the Roman Curia
Superseded as law in 1983 — read why this Code still matters. Each canon links to its 1983 counterpart.
§ 1. Over the Sacred Penitentiary is set the Cardinal Major Penitentiary. The jurisdiction of this tribunal is restricted to those things which regard the internal forum, even non-sacramental; wherefore this tribunal grants graces, absolutions, dispensations, commutations, sanations, and condonations for the internal forum alone; moreover it examines questions of conscience and settles them.
§ 2. It is also the part of the same tribunal to judge concerning all those things which look to the use and concession of indulgences, without prejudice to the right of the Holy Office to see those things which regard dogmatic doctrine concerning the same indulgences or concerning new prayers and devotions.
§ 1. Sacrae Poenitentiariae praeficitur Cardinalis Poenitentiarius Maior.
Causes requiring judicial order are conducted before the Sacred Roman Rota and before the Supreme Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura within the limits and according to the norms handed down in canons 1598-1605, without prejudice to the right of the Congregation of the Holy Office and of the Congregation of Sacred Rites in causes proper to themselves.
