Chapter — 1917 Code of Canon Law
Chapter II: Of the Subject of Confirmation
Superseded as law in 1983 — read why this Code still matters. Each canon links to its 1983 counterpart.
One not washed with the waters of baptism cannot validly be confirmed; moreover, in order that someone be confirmed licitly and fruitfully, he must be constituted in the state of grace and, if he has the use of reason, be sufficiently instructed.

Although this sacrament is not of the necessity of means for salvation, nevertheless it is lawful for no one, when the occasion has been offered, to neglect it; indeed pastors are to take care that the faithful approach it at the opportune time.

Although in the Latin Church the administration of the sacrament of confirmation is fittingly deferred to about the seventh year of age, nevertheless it can be conferred even earlier, if the infant is constituted in danger of death, or if it seems expedient to the minister for just and grave causes.

Those to be confirmed, if there are several, are to be present at the first imposition or extension of hands, nor are they to depart except when the rite has been completed.
Confirmandi, si plures sint, adsint primae manuum impositioni seu extensioni, nec nisi expleto ritu discedant.
