Title XX: Of the Preaching of the Divine Word
Superseded as law in 1983 — read why this Code still matters. Each canon links to its 1983 counterpart.
§ 1. The office of preaching the Catholic faith has been committed chiefly to the Roman Pontiff for the universal Church, and to Bishops for their dioceses.
§ 2. Bishops are held by the office of preaching the Gospel personally by themselves, unless they are prohibited by a legitimate impediment; and besides pastors, they must also take other suitable men as helpers for salutarily executing the office of preaching of this kind.
§ 1. Munus fidei catholicae praedicandae commissum praecipue est Romano Pontifici pro universa Ecclesia, Episcopis pro suis dioecesibus.
§ 2. Episcopi tenentur officio praedicandi per se ipsi Evangelium, nisi legitimo prohibeantur impedimento; et insuper, praeter parochos, debent alios quoque viros idoneos in auxilium assumere ad huiusmodi praedicationis munus salubriter exsequendum.
1983 Code correlation: can. 756-57
It is lawful for no one to exercise the ministry of preaching unless he has received a mission from a legitimate Superior, by a faculty peculiarly given or by an office conferred to which, from the sacred canons, the office of preaching inheres.
Nemini ministerium praedicationis licet exercere, nisi a legitimo Superiore missionem receperit, facultate peculiariter data, vel officio collato cui ex sacris canonibus praedicandi munus inhaereat.
