Title — 1917 Code of Canon Law
Title XXVI: Of the Canonization of the Blessed
Superseded as law in 1983 — read why this Code still matters. Each canon links to its 1983 counterpart.
No one can petition for the canonization of someone or obtain from the Sacred Congregation certain acts of cult in his honor unless it has first been established that the Servant of God of whom there is question has been enrolled among the Blessed either formally or equivalently.
§ 1. So that it may be established to the Sacred Congregation concerning formal or equivalent beatification in the case, an authentic document must be exhibited.
§ 2. If a document of this kind is not had, a legitimate process is to be instituted to prove the fact of positive permission of cult on the part of the Roman Pontiff.
§ 3. Once the process has been completed, a sentence to be subjected to the approval of the Roman Pontiff is to be issued in ordinary congregation.
§ 3. Processu absoluto, edatur in ordinaria congregatione sententia approbationi Romani Pontificis subiicienda.
§ 1. For the canonization of the Blessed who have been formally beatified, approval of two miracles is required, which have supervened after formal beatification.
§ 2. But for the canonization of the Blessed who have been equivalently beatified, approval of three miracles is required, which were performed after equivalent beatification.
§ 1. When some miracle is said to have been performed at the intercession of some Blessed, the Sacred Congregation, at the instance of the postulator, issues a decree, if this has pleased the Most Holy One, concerning resuming the cause and instructing new processes according to the norms handed down in the preceding canons.
§ 2. The validity of the processes having been proved, the discussion concerning new miracles is governed by the same laws which were established above in can. 2116-2124.
After all these things, the Roman Pontiff, after hearing the votes of the Cardinal Fathers and consultors, if and when he has judged it opportune, renders a decree by which he decrees that one can safely proceed to the solemn canonization of the Blessed.
Post haec omnia, Romanus Pontifex, auditis votis Patrum Cardinalium et consultorum, si et quando opportunum iudicaverit, decretum fert, quo decernit tuto procedi posse ad sollemnem Beati canonizationem.
The solemn canonization of the Blessed, after it has been decreed in Consistory, is made with the rites and solemnities received in the Roman Curia observed.
Sollemnis Beatorum canonizatio, postquam in Consistorio decreta fuerit, fit servatis ritibus et sollemnitatibus in Romana Curia receptis.
