Chapter — 1917 Code of Canon Law
Chapter VIII: Of the Time and Place of the Celebration of Marriage
Superseded as law in 1983 — read why this Code still matters. Each canon links to its 1983 counterpart.
§ 1. Marriage can be contracted at any time of the year.
§ 2. Only the solemn blessing of nuptials is forbidden from the first Sunday of Advent up to the day of the Nativity of the Lord inclusive, and from Ash Wednesday up to Easter Sunday inclusive.
§ 3. Nevertheless local Ordinaries can, with liturgical laws preserved, permit it even in the aforesaid times from a just cause, after warning the spouses that they abstain from excessive pomp.
§ 1. Matrimonium quolibet anni tempore contrahi potest.
§ 2. Sollemnis tantum nuptiarum benedictio vetatur a prima dominica Adventus usque ad diem Nativitatis Domini inclusive, et a feria IV Cinerum usque ad dominicam Paschatis inclusive.
§ 3. Ordinarii tamen locorum possunt, salvis legibus liturgicis, etiam praedictis temporibus eam permittere ex iusta causa, monitis sponsis ut a nimia pompa abstineant.
§ 1. Marriage between Catholics is to be celebrated in the parish church; but in another church or oratory, whether public or semi-public, it can be celebrated only by permission of the local Ordinary or pastor.
§ 2. Local Ordinaries can permit marriage to be celebrated in private houses only in some extraordinary case and with a just and reasonable cause always acceding; but in churches or oratories either of a Seminary or of religious women, Ordinaries are not to permit this unless necessity urges and suitable precautions have been employed.
§ 3. Marriages between a Catholic party and a non-Catholic party are to be celebrated outside a church; but if the Ordinary prudently judges that this cannot be observed without graver evils arising, it is committed to his prudent judgment to dispense in this matter, with the prescription of can. 1102, Sec. 2, nevertheless remaining firm.
