Chapter III. On the Time and Place of the Celebration of Marriage

747.

I. Time. Marriage can be contracted at any time of the year (canon 1108, § 1). But when the solemn blessing of nuptials is forbidden, see n. 744.

748.

II. Place. 1. Marriage between Catholics should be celebrated in the parish church; but in another church or oratory, whether public or semi-public, it can be celebrated only with the permission of the local Ordinary or the pastor (canon 1109, § 1).

  1. Local Ordinaries can permit marriage to be celebrated in private homes only in some extraordinary case and with a just and reasonable cause always present; but in churches or oratories either of a Seminary or of religious women, Ordinaries should not permit this unless necessity is urgent and suitable precautions have been employed (canon 1109, § 2).

  2. But marriages between a Catholic party and a non-Catholic party are to be celebrated outside the church; but if the Ordinary prudently judges that this cannot be observed without graver evils arising, it is committed to his prudent judgment to dispense in this matter, with the prescription of canon 1102, § 2 nevertheless remaining firm1 (canon 1109, § 3).

1 The cited canon excludes the celebration of Mass.
