Chapter — Vermeersch, Theologia Moralis

Chapter III: On Effective Charity

¶1.

Utility and Order of Speaking. - Under this title are explained the daily offices by which, in the evangelical law, brother is ordered and counseled to help brother in necessities both spiritual and bodily and temporal. There follow questions on exhortation and fraternal correction, on edification and scandal; finally on cooperation toward a good and evil action of neighbor. Both the multitude and the importance of matters of daily use ought to make the attention of the moral theologian solicitous. But it will be of the greatest profit to him to know well what necessities press neighbor today, how much the precept of alms is to be urged concerning things which, as to use, ought to remain common, and by what principles cases on cooperation are to be solved. We have at the same time indicated what order of speaking we shall follow.
