Chapter — Vermeersch, Theologia Moralis

Title II: Offices of Commutative Justice

¶1.

Order of speaking. Since these offices look to this, that each one's own right be rendered to him, their explanation is contained and completed by the explanation of rights. The order of speaking will be this: that we treat successively of the rights which are to be distinguished; - of the subject of rights; - of the object of rights; - of the modes of acquiring rights, in general; - of original modes; - of derived modes of acquiring rights through contract, through an office entrusted or admitted; through inheritance and testament; through another's delict or quasi-delict.

Utility. From this title the theologian ought especially to gather this fruit, that he sufficiently know various juridical acts and titles, at least for understanding the cases which are proposed, I do not say for solving them without the assistance of an expert in law; and that at the same time, once a solution of the external forum has been obtained, he may know how far that solution is efficacious in conscience, and may be able rightly to estimate the connected moral obligations.
