Chapter IX: Cessation of Law or of Obligation

¶1.

Order of treatment. - Freedom from obligation can be obtained both by suppressing the law itself and by relaxing its bond. But a law can cease extrinsically because of a new law, or intrinsically because it has become harmful or useless. But the bond of obligation can be removed when subjection has been taken away, or when an impediment has arisen, or when a dispensation has been granted. Therefore we must speak in order concerning both reasons of freedom and the various members or parts of each reason.
