Chapter — Vermeersch, Theologia Moralis
Title II: On Fasting and Abstinence
Usefulness. - The religious observance of this precept, with its spirit and evangelical foundation indicated, will have to be inculcated, especially as regards abstinence, by which many more persons are obliged. Fasting must be preached and explained in such a way that those who wish to fast may increase in number. But especially this must be urged: how much it is fitting that Christians renounce worldly feasts during the days which are destined for recalling the Passion of the Lord, for expiating sins, and for preparing paschal joy; at which time not only the memory of the Lord's Resurrection but also the spiritual resurrection of the faithful ought to excite and confirm holy joys.
Order. We shall follow this order: first to give a canonical exposition, then a moral exposition, of the ecclesiastical precept concerning temperance.
