Treatise — Vermeersch, Theologia Moralis
Treatise V: On Penance
— Appendix XI belongs to this section. Historical Introduction. Cf. Appendix XI.
This will be the order of speaking: first we shall treat of the essence and necessity of the sacrament of Penance, then of its minister; then of its subject, then of its various circumstances. In the chapter on the minister, we shall examine the case of one absolving an accomplice; in the chapter on the subject, the obligation of denouncing a solicitor.
Finally, imitating the canonical Code, we shall add to the treatise a chapter on indulgences.
Utility. Not only a distinct knowledge of the essential parts of this sacrament, which pertains to the necessary learning of the confessor, insofar as he must reconcile men with God, but also the force and value of the formulae which are added to the essence, will help the physician of souls not a little in procuring spiritual health.
