Antiphons, Verses, Lessons, Responsories, Te Deum

¶1.

Antiphons are doubled in greater and lesser doubles, at Matins, Lauds, and Vespers. In Paschal time, at Matins all the psalms of any Nocturn, even ferial, excepting the feasts and octaves of Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost, are said under one antiphon; this in an office of privileged rite is to be taken from the feast, and is the first in each Nocturn; but in an office of ordinary rite it is as noted in the Psalter.

Likewise in Paschal time, at Lauds and Vespers all the psalms, in ordinary, Sunday, and ferial Offices, are said under one antiphon, as in the Psalter. If some Feast has proper antiphons, as for example St. Agatha, St. Elizabeth, etc., then they are to be said together with their psalms at Matins and Vespers; but at Lauds with the psalms of Sunday; and at the lesser Hours the antiphons and psalms of the current feria are said.

On ferias of Advent, during the time from Septuagesima to Easter, on ferias of Ember Days, and on Vigils through the year, the antiphons and psalms at Lauds are said as in the second schema; and likewise at the Nocturn on Wednesday the last three psalms are said in the second place. But at Prime, after the other psalms, the first psalm of Lauds is said, from the first schema. The verse is said of the Time in a ferial office.

¶2.

Lessons from Scripture have been taken away from the Common in feasts of non-privileged rite. Nevertheless even for these they remain if those feasts occur on days on which Lessons from Sacred Scripture are vacant, or if they are altogether proper Lessons, or at least proper responsories. Rubrics to be observed, title I, n. 4.

Responsories are always proper or from the Common in feasts of whatever rite; but those of the Time are only in the respective Office. In feasts which have proper responsories, proper Lessons or assigned Lessons from the Common are read. Rubrics to be observed, title I, n. 4. "To Lessons from occurring Scripture let responsories of the Time always adhere." Pius X, Motu Proprio Abhinc duos annos, October 23, 1913, § III.

The Te Deum is always said in the Office of Saints, even Simple, or of St. Mary on Saturday; in the Office of Sundays or Ferias it is omitted only when at Matins the ninth or third Responsory is had.
