III. Concerning Responsories of the Time, Lessons from Occurring Scripture, and Other Proper Parts of Offices
- In Offices both of nine and of three Lessons, whenever Lessons are taken from occurring Scripture, the Responsories of the Time are to be used with them; in such a way nevertheless that the Lessons of any Sunday, even if they are replaced within the week and said together with the Lessons of a Feria, always take the Responsories from the first Nocturn of that Sunday itself. But Lessons of a Feria, if they are transferred or anticipated, provided nevertheless that they are not said together with the Lessons of Sunday, take Responsories from the current Feria, to be newly arranged in Ferias of Paschal Time. Nevertheless the following are excepted: a) Lessons from occurring Scripture to be recited within privileged Octaves of the universal Church, which are always said with Responsories of the Octave. b) Lessons from some Beginning of occurring Scripture, which necessarily are to be placed, according to the Rubrics, in Offices having proper Lessons or Lessons assigned from the Common, and which are said with proper Responsories of Offices of this kind if they are had; otherwise with Responsories of the Time, but never from the Common. c) Lessons from Scripture placed on Sundays after Epiphany, which, if they are transferred within the week, are said with Responsories of the current Feria. d) Responsories of Monday within the first Week after Epiphany and of Monday within the first Week after the Octave of Pentecost, which, if they are impeded on their own day, are transferred further, according to their proper Rubrics.
The Responsories which in the Feasts of St. Lucy, Virgin and Martyr, of Saints John and Paul, Martyrs, and of St. Clement, Pope and Martyr, are had as proper in the first Nocturn, are to be placed in the second Nocturn, in place of the Responsories from the Common; and in the first Nocturn the Lessons from occurring Scripture are to be said with Responsories of the Time.
Similarly, all things which in the Feast of St. Elizabeth, Queen and Widow, are had as proper, except the Invitatory, Hymns, Lessons of the second Nocturn, Verses at both Vespers and Lauds, Antiphons at Magnificat and at Benedictus, and the Prayer, are to be expunged; and in the first Nocturn likewise Lessons from occurring Scripture are to be said with Responsories of the Time.
In the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, the psalms at Compline and the other lesser Hours are no longer to be taken from the occurring day of the week, but proper ones are to be assigned.
