Offices of Ordinary Rite, or Non-Privileged
The Offices of the occurring day of the week take the ferial Offices, or festive Offices not comprehended in the preceding, which are of the rite of greater or lesser double, semidouble, or simple. The psalms with antiphons are to be recited in all the Hours as in the Psalter.
The versicles before the Lessons of Matins are those which are designated through the year, outside Paschal time, or in Paschal time. The antiphons and psalms of the third Nocturn of Matins on Wednesday, and also the antiphons, psalms, and Canticle of Lauds of each feria, are taken from the first schema. The antiphons of Prime, Terce, Sext, and None are those which are designated through the year or in Paschal time.
From Monday after Low Sunday up to Friday after the Octave of the Ascension, and in all Offices of three Lessons up to and including the Vigil of the Ascension, under one antiphon Alleluia are said the three psalms of each Nocturn in doubles or semidoubles, or the nine psalms of the single Nocturn in other Offices.
Feasts of rite lower than a double of the second class keep proper antiphons and psalms, and versicles of Matins, if they have them and where they have them. But the antiphons of Lauds are not repeated in the lesser Hours.
The whole Office is to be ordered in this way in non-privileged feasts:
In feasts of nine Lessons, at Matins, the Invitatory and Hymn are from the Proper or from the respective Common. The antiphons, psalms, and versicles of the three Nocturns are of the current feria; but on Wednesday the antiphons, psalms, and versicles of the third Nocturn are taken from the first Schema in the office of Saints. The Lessons of the first Nocturn are from the occurring Scripture, with responsories of the Time unless otherwise noted. The Lessons of the second and third Nocturns are as in the Breviary concerning the feast, with responsories from the Common or proper ones. But if in the first Nocturn there are proper Lessons and proper responsories, these are read.
At Lauds, the antiphons with psalms are of the current feria. The Chapter and the rest are from the Proper or respective Common. The antiphons and psalms are as in the first Schema for the office of Saints.
At Prime, the Hymn is as in the Ordinary. The antiphons and psalms are of the current feria; the Chapter is Regi saeculorum; the brief Responsory with Gloria, and the rest as in the Ordinary; at the end the short Lesson is the Chapter of None.
When, in a festive office, the psalms of Sunday are prescribed at Lauds and the Hours, then at Lauds the psalms are in the first place, and at Prime in place of Psalm 117, Confitemini, Psalm 53, Deus in nomine tuo, is said, without the Creed.
At Terce, Sext, and None, the Hymns are as in the Ordinary. The antiphons and psalms are of the current feria. The Chapter and the rest are as in the Proper or respective Common.
At Vespers, the antiphons and psalms are of the current feria. The Chapter and the rest are from the Proper or respective Common.
At Compline, the antiphons and psalms are of the current feria. The rest is as in the Ordinary. Nevertheless attention must be paid whether the preceding Vespers were entire, or at least from the chapter, of another feast or Office which requires psalms and antiphons in Compline from Sunday.
But in feasts of three Lessons, and in the Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday, at Matins the Invitatory and Hymn are from the Proper or from the Common. The antiphons and psalms are of the current feria, the versicles and the rest in the first and second Nocturn being omitted, and the psalms with antiphons thus continued up to the versicle of the third Nocturn. The versicle designated for Paschal time is said also in the Office of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Saturday. The first and second Lessons are of the current feria; the third is of the Office or feast, with two joined into one if there are two in the Breviary.
At Lauds and the other Hours, as in the office of nine Lessons. Constitution Divino afflatu, Rubrics, title 1, n. 3 ff.
Both the simple Office and that of St. Mary end at None and therefore lack second Vespers; nevertheless they can have first Vespers, which, together with Compline, are to be ordered as in the ordinary Office of a feast.
The simple Office "has only first Vespers, in which the ferial psalms are said, and from the Chapter it is of the feast, unless an office of nine Lessons concurs with it, because then only a Commemoration is made of it; and its office terminates at None, and nothing further is made of it, nor a commemoration." General Rubrics of the Breviary, title 3, n. 3.
In simple feasts which have at Lauds proper antiphons taken from another feast, as in the second feast of St. Agnes, at Lauds the antiphons and psalms of Lauds of the occurring feria are to be said, and from the Chapter and thereafter it is of the simple feast. Sacred Congregation of Rites, January 26, 1912.
In the Office of St. Mary on Saturday, at Lauds the antiphons and psalms of the occurring Saturday are to be said, and from the Chapter and thereafter it is of St. Mary. Sacred Congregation of Rites, January 26, 1912.
