Article II. On the Sources of Morality
¶1.
The sources of morality are named those principles which give to human acts species, or a modification of species, in the genus of morals.
¶2.
Three sources of morality are numbered, namely 1. the object of the act; 2. its circumstances; 3. the end of the agent. These three are altogether required for a good act; if even one is evil, the act will become evil. Hence the well-known axiom: Good from an integral cause, evil from any defect whatsoever.
