4 That pamphlet was taken from the larger work Bau und Leben des sozialen Körpers [Structure and Life of the Social Body], and was rendered into French by the socialist B. Malon.

¶1581.

Professor Schaeffle’s work already greatly favors the economic tenets of collectivism. Among the very doctors of present-day socialism may be mentioned: K. Marx and F. Engels, Manifeste du Parti Communiste [Manifesto of the Communist Party];6 K. Marx, Das Kapital [Capital];7 Lasalle, Kapital und Arbeit [Capital and Labor];8 B. Malon, Précis de Socialisme [Summary of Socialism], Le Socialisme intégral [Integral Socialism]; Destrée and Vandervelde, Le Socialisme en Belgique [Socialism in Belgium]; Bernstein (among the supporters of moderated Socialism), Die Voraussetzungen des Sozialismus und die Aufgaben der Sozialdemokratie [The Preconditions of Socialism and the Tasks of Social Democracy]; H. George (the author of agrarian socialism), Progress and Poverty, La condition des ouvriers, lettre au Pape Léon XIII [The Condition of the Workers: A Letter to Pope Leo XIII];9 Jean Jaurès, Études socialistes [Socialist Studies]. In addition, the pamphlets which relate the deliberations customarily held among socialists must be consulted. Several books by Rev. D. Winterer can be referred to this class, for example, Le Socialisme international [International Socialism].

6 It first appeared in German.

7 There exists a French translation of the first volume of this work, which surpasses the German edition in clarity, or rather in a lesser obscurity of style.

8 B. Malon also rendered this work into French.

9 We shall use the French edition.
