Very Reverend Father,
The man whom you sought as censor of the book On Justice that you were to publish has, and not without reason, become its approver. It is indeed an excellent work, both for its abundance of doctrine and its singular wisdom in judging matters, and for the timeliness of the subjects set forth.
What especially, unless I am mistaken, will please learned men is this: that, leaving behind the too well-worn path of compendia, you have brought the matters back to the balance in such a way as to provide for the advancement of moral science worthy of the name; and at the same time, something most desirable in our age, by illuminating the understanding of the matters, you have effectively contributed aid toward the concord of minds that, as I hope, is now altogether to be perfected.
It has afforded me no less pleasure that you have so happily accomplished the greater part of a plan of mine, which I had conceived in my mind but which perhaps I would not be permitted to carry out for several years:
namely, that I should revise anew the book that I published fifteen years ago on the same subject of right and justice, adding solutions of questions recently raised.
Accordingly, Very Reverend Father, I heartily congratulate you on the excellent work, and I pray to the Lord for every blessing for you.
+ G. I., Bishop of Bruges
