Chapter I. On the Nature and Effects of Extreme Unction
1500. - I. Extreme Unction is defined as a Sacrament of the new law instituted by Christ for conferring the salvation of the soul, or even of the body, upon a sick person whose life is in danger, through the anointing of blessed Oil and the prayer of the priest.
II. The effects of the Sacrament of Extreme Unction are:
1° Sanctifying grace, with actual graces proper to the Sacrament, which wonderfully help to recreate the sick person and to strengthen him against the temptations of the devil.
2° Remission of all sins not yet remitted, even mortal sins. It is established from Scripture: And if he be in sins, they shall be forgiven him.1 Hence the Sacrament of Extreme Unction is indeed primarily a Sacrament of the living, but secondarily it is a Sacrament of the dead, namely in the hypothesis of the state of sin. It certainly remits venial sins per se; more probably it also remits mortal sins in the same way, although secondarily.2
3° The wiping away of the remnants of sin, which are not only the penalties due to sins, but also anxieties of soul, infirmities, languor toward good, torpor, fear, and other similar things which are contracted from sins. But these effects are greater, the better the sick person is disposed in soul.
4° Restoration of the health of the body sometimes, if it is expedient for the salvation of the soul. It is established from Scripture: The prayer of faith shall save the sick man,3 and from Trent.4 Hence it appears how shamefully they err who do not receive this Sacrament unless when the disease has so prevailed that now they cannot be healed without a miracle.1
