Treatise — Konings, Theologia Moralis

Treatise on Matrimony

¶1.

Matrimony is so called from the office of the mother, as Theologians commonly have it with St. Thomas; because in this society the principal parts seem to pertain to the mother. Matrimony is also called conjugium from the common yoke to which man and woman are subjected. Likewise it is called nuptiae or connubium from the word nubere, because spouses formerly were veiled when they were handed over to their husbands. Likewise it is called consortship, because man and woman have a common lot.

¶2.

We must treat 1° of betrothals; 2° of the proclamation of banns; 3° of the nature and properties of Matrimony; 4° of its matter and form; 5° of its minister and subject; 6° of the impediments of Matrimony; 7° of the revalidation of an invalid Matrimony; 8° of the conjugal debt.
