Section — Konings, Theologia Moralis
F. Five propositions of Cornelius Jansen, excerpted from his book whose title is Augustinus, condemned by Innocent X, by the constitution Cum occasione, etc., May 31, 1653; also by Alexander VII, by the constitution Ad sanctam B. Petri Sedem, etc., October 16, 1665, then by the constitution Regiminis apostolici, etc., February 15, 1664, in which he issued the formulary; finally by Clement XI, by the constitution Vineam Domini sabaoth, etc., July 16, 1705
¶1.
- Some commandments of God are impossible for just men willing and striving according to the present powers which they have; there is also lacking to them the grace by which they may become possible. Declared and condemned as rash, impious, blasphemous, to be condemned by anathema, and heretical.
¶2.
- Interior grace is never resisted in the state of fallen nature. Declared and condemned as heretical.
¶3.
- For meriting and demeriting in the state of fallen nature, liberty from necessity is not required in man, but liberty from coercion suffices. Declared and condemned as heretical.
¶4.
- The Semipelagians admitted the necessity of prevenient interior grace for individual acts, even for the beginning of Faith; and in this they were heretics, because they wished that grace to be such that the human will could resist or obey it. Declared and condemned as false and heretical.
¶5.
- It is Semipelagian to say that Christ died or poured out his blood for absolutely all men. Declared and condemned as false, rash, scandalous, and, understood in the sense that Christ died only for the salvation of the predestined, impious, blasphemous, insulting, derogating from divine piety, and heretical.
¶6.
Formulary of Alexander VII.
"I, N., submit myself to the apostolic constitution of Innocent X, given on May 31, 1653, and to the constitution of Alexander VII, given on October 16, 1656, the Supreme Pontiffs; and the five propositions excerpted from the book of Cornelius Jansen whose name is Augustinus, and in the sense intended by the same author, just as the Apostolic See condemned them through the said constitutions, I reject and condemn with a sincere mind, and so I swear. So may God help me, and these holy Gospels of God."
