ARTICLE I: On Suicide

¶1.

Mutilation of one's own body is referred to suicide. Hence we shall treat: 1. of killing; 2. of mutilation of oneself.

¶2.

In these things it is presupposed that every man is held to preserve life and the integrity of members. For life is given by God so that we may use it in order to the life of the future age. Therefore whatever is necessary for these things is imposed on us. Yet by no right is it required that we use a difficult, extraordinary remedy, or one from which we greatly shrink (III, 372). - Indeed let there be honor to the physician (Eccli., 38, 1-4), but from this it does not follow that he sins who in a light infirmity does not summon him. Much less will he sin who rejects a dangerous operation, unless goods of the greatest moment must be saved and success is morally certain.
