Dissertation II: On The Subject Of The Sacrament Of Penance

¶1664.
  1. That every and only baptized man, fallen into at least venial fault, is the SUBJECT of the Sacrament of Penance, is already sufficiently known from the things disputed above. But this is proper and peculiar to this Sacrament, that its subject must contribute something, not only to its licit and fruitful reception, but to its very confection, namely by placing the proximate matter, which consists in the acts of the penitent himself, namely in CONTRITION, CONFESSION, and SATISFACTION. Therefore we must treat accurately of these acts, which are at once the proximate matter of the Sacrament and dispositions of the subject for receiving it.
